We have written about the benefits of fish oil in reducing triglycerides in the past and now a study looking at whether fish oil helps chronic heart failure was recently published in the journal Heart. The study was an analysis of data taken from 7 trials that had a total of 825 participants. The study revealed that the left ventricle of the heart was able to pump more blood when the diet was supplemented with fish oil.
According to foodconsumer.org,
The study showed patients taking fish oil supplements experienced 2.5% increased left ventricular ejection fraction and 7.85 ml reduced left ventricular end-systolic volume although it had no significant effect on left ventricular end-diastolic volume, compared to controls. The changes were significant and desirable.
Further research indicated the improvement in left ventricular systolic function was more remarkable in fish oil supplemented patients with nonischaemic heart failure.
Fish oil supplements were also found to improve the New York Heart Association functional classification and peak oxygen consumption in those with non-ischaemic heart failure.
The researchers concluded ” Improvement in cardiac function, remodelling and functional capacity may be important mechanisms underlying the potential therapeutic role of fish oil for patients with CHF. These effects might be more remarkable in patients with non-ischaemic heart failure.”
About Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
If you are diagnosed with chronic heart failure, or congestive heart failure, you know that your heart isn’t pumping as well as it should be. That means there is less blood circulating through your body. Less blood circulating means there is less oxygen being delivered to all of the important organs, such as your brain and your kidneys. Without the oxygen, these organs slowly begin to die and eventually can fail to work.
Another factor of congestive heart failure is that the blood that is not pumped by the heart backs up and caused swelling or edema, which you may first notice in your feet and ankles. You may become short of breath, which is due to fluid accumulating in your lungs.
Causes of Congestive Heart Failure
CHF is actually a result of other diseases or conditions that have caused the heart to overwork and become weakened. Conditions that lead to CHF are:
- Coronary artery disease, including angina and heart attacks
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Diseases of the heart valves
- Cancer treatments, such as radiation and certain chemo drugs
- Thyroid disorders
- Alcohol abuse
- Cocaine and other drug abuse

Fish Oil May Help Other Diseases
In addition to heart failure, fish oil benefits may benefit
- high cholesterol
- low immunity
- chronic inflammation
- inflammatory bowel disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- eye disorders
- age-related macular degeneration
- weight loss
- skin care, particularly for psoriasis and acne
Fish oil is a relatively inexpensive treatment that is worth its weight in gold. Whether or not you suffer from any of the diseases mentioned here, you may want to consider adding fish oil supplements to your daily routine to maximize your health and wellness.
