High Triglycerides in Children

Children with high triglyceride levels need to lower triglyceride levels to reduce the development of possible future diseases.  High triglycerides can be an early warning sign for possible heart disease.

Even though medications are widely used to treat high triglycerides in children, there are still cases that the high levels can be lowered through lifestyle changes. A regular exercise regimen that involves aerobic exercises for four to five days a week can be very helpful in reducing triglycerides in children who are considered sedentary.

The Test

High triglyceride levels in children are determined by just a simple blood test. Normal levels in children are less than 150mg/dl. Treatment for children is influenced by how high the triglyceride levels are. As what we have said earlier, some children may require medication, while others can lower their levels simply by taking necessary changes in their lifestyle.

Children usually do not exhibit any symptoms of hypertriglyceridemia. But, according to research studies, there is a correlation between obesity and high levels of triglycerides on children.

Keep your little kids healthy!

Elevated levels of triglycerides can be caused by diets containing more triglyceride and LDL cholesterol like fast foods. Although junk foods and fast foods are very easy to buy, they are not that healthy for children. They are considered as culprits that can cause health problems like atherosclerosis which could lead to heart disease or stroke.

When high levels of cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides are seen, it is a sign of an atherosclerotic plaque, and as this continues, the plaque can clog the arteries leading to coronary heart disease.

To set goals for your kids, start by being a good example to them. Cook home-cooked meals that has low calorie content and let your child help you in preparing these healthy foods. With this, you can teach your child about foods that are healthy and foods that are not.

Foods that contain higher amounts of sugar and simple carbohydrates like baked goods, candies and soft drinks can keep those triglyceride levels high.

Limit your child’s intake of foods that have high fat and sugar contents since this can help in reducing the levels of triglycerides in children, especially those who are already overweight.

One effective way in lowering triglyceride levels is to increase the level of Omega-3 fatty acids in the child’s diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are very beneficial in improving the cognitive function in children, as well as helping in reducing triglycerides and blood clots, lowering blood pressure levels and improving the body’s immune system. Omega-3 is known for reducing the risk of heart disease and cardiac deaths.

Lack of physical exercise is an additional aspect that can increase triglycerides. Lipid levels are also affected by a few conditions that include diabetes, kidney disease and hypothyroidism.

Exercise is definitely a simple but effective way to reduce high triglycerides in children. Some pediatricians will suggest some form of cardio workout for at least an hour a day, 2 -3 times per week.
