Learn How to Lower High Triglycerides

Learning how to lower triglycerides is the one of the first steps you need to take when you have been diagnosed with a high triglyceride level. Choosing to ignore your triglyceride level is not an option if you are looking to have a long, healthy life.

Diet and lifestyle? Natural supplements? Prescription medicine? What treatment is right for you when it comes to lowering your triglyceride level? The choices you have in treating your high triglycerides depend on what is causing the problem. A high triglyceride level is a symptom– a sign that something is not right. For most of us, our diet and lifestyle choices are the culprit. For others, maybe not.

For others, it may be a sign of uncontrolled diabetes. Or perhaps hypothyroidism or a kidney problem.  Closely working with your doctor is necessary to determine what is causing the high level of triglycerides.  Taking medications to specifically lower your triglycerides if you are dealing with undiagnosed hypothyroidism or an unknown kidney issue can be dangerous.

So, if you have an underlying condition that is causing your triglycerides to be high, then that condition needs to be treated first. When it is corrected or treated, then be sure to have your triglycerides level rechecked to see where they‘re at.

This would also apply to those cases where another medication may be causing the triglycerides to be above-normal.  If you are on other medications and you find that your triglycerides are high, talk with your doctor about the possibility of one of your medications being the cause. Can you switch to a different medication?

Another cause of high triglycerides may be a genetic disorder. Do high triglycerides run in your family? Is there early heart disease in your family? It is very important to establish whether genetics is one of the causes because, if it is, you are at a greater risk for heart disease and other related problems.

Once you have established the cause of the elevated triglycerides, you can then work on the solution. But,  generally, the diet and lifestyle of the majority of Americans can be improved to protect us against heart disease, strokes and diabetes.
